Begin with a firm healthy pineapple
with green leaves. The skin of the pineapple should be
golden in color and not too ripe. You can tell this by
pulling on one of the pineapple's leaves- if it comes off
easily, the pineapple is too ripe for growing.
Next, cut off the pineapple's crown and
strip the lower leaves exposing the stem, being sure to remove
any actual pineapple fruit without damaging the stem. It is very
important that all meat of the fruit is removed since this can
rot your plant during the growing process.
Turn the pineapple upside and let it
dry out for approximately one week. The cut end of the
pineapple must harden for a pineapple plant to grow healthy.
Place the pineapple crown in a glass of
water until roots start to grow. Change the water every
few days. Choose a bright place to grow your pineapple
plant but keep the plant away from any extreme temperatures.
Plant the pineapple's crown in a 6 inch
pot with light garden soil. The soil should be pressed
firmly around the pineapple crown, taking care to avoid getting
soil on the leaves of the plant.
Growing pineapples requires light care;
water your pineapple plant once a week and fertilize with
mid-strength fertilizer twice monthly during the warm seasons.
Pineapples prefer to grow in moist, but
not soggy, soil. Pineapple plants grow best in bright,
sunny atmospheres with plenty of humidity (frequent misting can
replace humidity if your area is dry.) Temperature should
never drop below 65ºF (18ºC).
After several years, a red cone should
appear followed by attractive blue flowers. These flowers
eventually grow into a pineapple. Pineapples take about 6
months to grow fully.
